First, it is important to calculate the cheaper option: to move yourself or to hire a moving company. The cost is dependent on how far you’re moving and what time you have for it.
In both case, there are several tips to cut-down on your cost.
1. De-clutter and Reduce your load. Get rid of stuff you don’t need. Hold a garage sale. Anything you don’t sell, give to a local charity. Calculation is simple: the less items and boxes, the less money.
2. Make sure you’re ready to move. Pack it yourself and have everything ready to go. Moving companies will charge for the time if they have to help pack last minute items. If you have furniture that needs to be disassembled,- do it before movers come, otherwise it is costing you the time for them to do it.
3. Move during the off-season. Choosing the best time to move will save you money. Off season is usually anything but June and July. If you have the flexibility, try to avoid the first and last days of the month. Talk to your movers and see if they can give you a mid-month rate.
