Tips on Residential Moving in Toronto
If you’re moving to a different neighborhood within Toronto or the GTA, here are some tips to ensure a smooth moving transition. The first step is to find reputable residential movers in Toronto who are licensed, experienced, and have positive reviews and feedback on user-generated social media sites. Call up different GTA movers to obtain ballpark estimates, and see if they ask you permission to come to your home to inspect all that needs to be moved, so that they can provide you with an accurate moving quotation in writing. Once the movers give you a quote, contact other moving companies in Toronto or the GTA to make comparisons. General rule of thumb is to never go with the cheapest residential movers (i.e. those who give very low quotations) cause you just may end up paying exorbitant fees that are in the “fine print.” Nobody likes to get scammed.
Research Schools
As soon as you’ve purchased your new home, contact the local district school board to see which schools are available within the neighborhood, and that best suit your children (i.e. Catholic, Public, or Private schools). And once you’ve figured out which school your kids will be attending, visit the registrar’s office to have them enrolled asap.
Change of Address and Transfer Utilities
If you live in GTA, you’ll need to notify Toronto Hydro, Enbridge Gas, and Toronto Solid & Waste Management to have them transfer your utilities to the new location a couple of days prior to the actual moving date. That way, your home will either be warm or cool (depending if it’s winter or summer), and your fridge and freezers will be ready to take in perishable groceries. Don’t forget to visit Canada Post and complete the “Change of Address” form to ensure that your mail will be forwarded during the grace period of your transition to the new home.
Reduce Your Load
Residential movers in Toronto will generally charge by volume, and so if you have items in the home that you can part ways with, donate, sell and give away those unneeded things to not just save yourself moving fees but to allow another family to make good use of your unwanted item. Reducing your physical load will also reduce your mental load- uncluttered.
Fragile Items Get Packed Last
It’s important that you pack your most fragile items last, simply because they will likely end up near the back of the moving truck which means there’s less likelihood that those items will be damaged during loading, offloading, and transport since they will loaded last and offloaded first. Be sure to use ample bubble wrap, paper, fabric sheets, garbage bags and other kinds of materials to wrap fragile items before placing them in the boxes and placed onto the moving truck.
Pack A Month Ahead of Time
The bottom line is that you need to pack in advance- start at least a month before the move. Every day should involve packing of at least a few items which are not considered “essentials.” You’d be surprised at how fast time flies, and that moving day will quickly creep up in just a matter of time. And if you’re organized, there will be no chaos since most of your belongings will have been packed. When you plan and pack ahead of time, the moving process is less stressful and you can focus more on getting excited about the place you will be moving to.
