Consumer Checklist for a Moving Company

When you prepare to move, think about the criteria you look for in a moving company because you want to make sure that the movers are a good fit for your needs and budget. Make sure that the moving company you choose is licensed and insured and that they have years of experience in this business. If possible, ask to speak with the owner of the moving company directly to get the straight facts and figures such as extra fees for additional moving services, and what’s NOT included in the quoted overall cost.

Estimating Your Moving Costs

In order to properly estimate the moving costs when hiring a moving company, you want to factor in the cost of labor, gas, and mileage since these parameters are generally included in the total estimate of a moving company’s quotation. You also want to add in the cost of auto transport and the packing of your items if the moving company will pack as well as transport your items out of town.  If you want to save money on labour charges, simply pack your items yourselves.

Watch Out for Fraudulent Movers

Another thing you should do is look out for fraudulent movers- visit the Better Business Bureau’s (www.bbb.org) website to inquire about the moving companies you have in mind. If a moving company cannot verify that they are licensed and insured, this is a red flag…walk away.  Also, look out for companies that rely heavily on flashy ads and testimonials because this means they could be hiding the truth from you about their business as they could be “paid” ads and customer feedback.  Never do business with a moving company that asks for cash upfront when they visit your home to give an estimate, and do not accept an estimate over the phone.

Read the Moving Contract Carefully and Ask Questions

As you read the moving contract or agreement, ask questions if you are unclear about anything that is stated in the document. You need to ask the owner of the moving company which services will and will not be included in the overall cost and make sure those services are listed in the contract- no such thing as verbal agreements. You also want to get insurance documentation from the mover as a way of getting compensation should something get damaged while on the road. Have another witness in the room with you as you sign and discuss the moving contract.

Final General Moving Tips

Once you have chosen the moving company and have a set moving date, you need to have your utilities transferred to the new location at least a week before you move there, and you will have to visit the post office to get a change of address so that your mail will be forwarded to the new address. Inform your employer, doctors and your children’s principal of the move at least 2-3 months in advance before you leave your current residence. Finally, pace yourself and start packing months in advance before the moving date, to make things easier for you and the movers.
