Moving Into a Smaller Home

Moving Into a Smaller Home

It can be intimidating when you are moving into a smaller space. You have likely collected “stuff” over the past years that you cannot imagine parting with, but you would be surprised at just how much you don’t need….seriously.  Whether it is out of necessity or choice, it can be difficult to see how you will be able to downsize your life correctly. The key is to start in steps, and by making small concessions you can get to where you need to be without having to stress about getting rid of everything all at once.  Furthermore, finding good homes who will gladly take in your items often helps to make the transition easier.

 The Initial Go Through

First and foremost, you need to go through your home and choose the items you definitely cannot live without- necessities and NOT wants. This often includes things such as electronics, appliances, as well as certain furniture pieces. As you start processing the idea of which furniture to part ways with, the first thing to consider is if it will fit in your new place, or whether you should acquire something more compact. You also have to be diligent about going through smaller items that will really just cause clutter in a smaller home- this is where you can really cut down on your unneeded “stuff.” For example, consider reducing the amount of dishes which will just occupy more cabinet space.  Chance are, you won’t be hosting a huge party in your limited space home where those excess kitchenware items will be a requirement right?   If you don’t have people over much, keep the bare minimum when it comes to plates and flatware.

 Parting Ways With Your “Stuff”

Part of the removal process is to understand that your “stuff” are going to a good home that will most likely appreciate and make great use of it. If there are certain items you have trouble parting with, consider giving these to family members, neighbors, community centers, and the less fortunate who would appreciate them. Things such as furniture pieces and dishes are great to give to people who are just moving out on their own- we all need something to place our food in right?

 Junk Removal Services

Check into a Toronto junk removal service as you can save lots of money by knowing how you are getting rid of stuff. Often donation centers are willing to come out for free to remove items that would be of use to them. But for things that are broken (and can’t be repaired) or not useful, you will need to find a way to dispose of the items on your own. And if you’re just too busy or lazy, you can contact a junk removal company which will generally get rid of everything in one fell swoop for a flat fee, which will save you time in the process.

The hardest aspect in downsizing anything is to just start the process of eliminating.  But you might be surprised at just how free you feel after you have gotten rid of things you realize afterwards that you didn’t really need. It’s truly amazing at all the things you collect over time and how much space that takes up. Moving into a smaller home often seems like a challenge at first, but once you parse out your things you will find that it is not only easier to keep your house in order, but also gives you more free time to do the things you love.
